Quote from the description of the work of Pakhomov:
"...After the blockade was lifted, Leningrad began to heal its wounds from shells and bombs,
and this work fell primarily on the shoulders of the girls -
employees of the local air defense system (MPVO).
During the blockade, these girls donated their blood for the wounded, were on duty on the roofs,
extinguished incendiary bombs, carried out the wounded,
excavated houses that had collapsed from the bombs,
walked around the apartments,
carried out the dead, took them to the hospital weakened by hunger, cleaned the snow on the streets.
These girls were seen everywhere,
it seems that everything in the city was done by their hands.
The blockade ended - and the girls of the
MPVO
became bricklayers, plasterers, roofers,
carpenters, and fitters. They cleaned up the ruins, rebuilt war-damaged buildings,
tested and conducted electrical wires before giving the city light.
In the rear city, young girls (most of them were schoolgirls or young women workers before the war),
having learned urgently the craft of builders,
rebuilt their hometown, prepared buildings for a peaceful life,
so that these houses could take into their walls and returning from the evacuation
of Leningrad and returned after the victory of the soldiers..."

Alexei Pakhomov (1900 - 1973).
The Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 found the artist in Leningrad, surrounded by the German army. On a par with the few artists of the besieged city, Pakhomov continues to create and creates the lithographed cycle Leningrad in the Blockade. According to these drawings, campaign posters of 1942-43 were made.
Men go to the front, women, teenagers and children remain in the city. AF Pakhomov dedicated his suite to them. Leaf by leaf he shows life in a city where there was neither light, nor water, nor firewood, where a piece of bread was wealth. The German army, encircling Leningrad with a blockade ring, continuously bombed the city. From hunger, cold and bombing every morning on the streets of the city there were many corpses. The artist spoke about the exploits of women and youth in Leningrad, who performed their duty despite the blockade. They remove the snow, are on duty on the roofs, carry out victims from the focus of damage.
They enthusiastically restore the destroyed architectural monuments of their native city.
In the atmosphere of the post-war rise and activation of the inhabitants' forces to restore Leningrad, Pakhomov creates a cycle of lithographs "In our city" (1944-46). Cheerful mood, a charge of optimism passes the artist in sketches of people, streets and houses of the city. For these cycles Pakhomov was awarded the Stalin Prize.
