Description
This is an old Forest Service sign. It is made of paper and measures appx. 9" x 11" . It is fairly thick paper stock which is appx. .014" thick as compared to regular blue-line which is appx. .003" thick. It reads as follows:"This Tree Is A White Fir (Abies Concolor)....White Fir is good for wood pulp and boxes and for lumber for general construction where great strength or lasting qualities are not essential. The wood is light (26 pounds per cubic foot when dry, moderately soft, and easily worked.)
The tree reproduces readily and grows rapidly. It does not form pure stands, but grows in mixture with other species.
White Fir is sometimes called "Balsam Fir" because of the balsalm blisters found on the
bark of the younger trees.
The gun from these blisters has medicinal value.
The cones of White Fir differ from pine cones in having a smooth instead of rough surface, and maturing in one instead of two years. As with pine, each seed bears a wing. When the
cone opens, the wing puts the seed into a "tail-spin". The fall is thus retarded, so that
the wind scatters the seeds far and wide through the forest. Below that reads....Study The
Trees, And Find Out For Yourself Why It Pays To PREVENT FOREST FIRES."
It has a very tiny tack hole in the top area and minimal shelf wear. Overall, very good condition.
According to the information I've gathered this was the official FS emblem used from 1920-1938. This one is not dated.
