    Description

Private Edward L. Berryman, Company D, 106th Engineer Regiment, 31st Division, AEF, KIA Photo Group.
The images in this photo group depict Private Berryman in life and in death - Mrs. Berryman, his mother - Berryman's official AEF grave site - Berryman's casket at his stateside funeral after repatriation to the United States - his final resting place in the United States - as well as images of him as a civilian and as a soldier.
    The images are as follows:
    1. Berryman's AEF grave site - 2.75 X 3.75 inches
    2. Mrs. Berryman with "Son in Service" flag - 2.75 X 4.5 inches
    3. Berryman's casket before burial, No. 1 - 5.5 X 3.5 inches
    4. Berryman's Casket before burial, No. 2 - 5.5 X 3.5 inches
    5. Berryman's stateside grave site - 5.5 X 3.5 inches
    6. Berryman in happier times - 5.5 X 3.5 inches
    7. Berryman in service, No. 1 - 2.25 X 3.25 inches
    8. Berryman in service, No. 2 - 2.25 X 3.25 inches
    9. Berryman in service, No. 3 - 2.25 X 3.25 inches
    10. Berryman in service No. 4 (torn in half) - 2.25 X 3.25 inches
    11. Berryman in service No. 5 (removed from a locket) - 1.5 inches diameter
    11. Miniature postcard of the R.M.S. Balmoral Castle, the ship that brought Berryman's remains back to the United States - 3 X 1.5 inches
Some time after the signing of the Armistice, it was determined by Congress and the War Department that the next of kin of AEF KIAs overseas could either leave the remains of their loved ones in the foreign cemeteries in Europe or have their remains brought back to the United States to be buried closer their bereaved families. The Berryman family ultimately decided it would be best for their son Edward to be repatriated to America and reburied there
    .
This is the only group of photos depicting the post-war repatriation of AEF KIAs that I have ever encountered.
