Condition
: This bottle is in GOOD SOLID condition. It has some patches of cloudy stain, some light ground patina and wear, just enough to give it that old rustic look. It actually looks just like what a CENTURY OLD + bottle should look like, a little weathered though NOTHING SIGNIFICANTLY wrong with it. It does have a m
anufacturing defect that
could be mistaken for a paper thin flake off of heel,
but if you look c
lose you can see it is actually a blob of glass that extends beyond the flake,
ABOVE
the surface of the glass, which proves it to be a manufacturing defect as no damage, chip, can add glass to a surface. It is such a rare piece that if I was going to keep it, I would have it polished as with just a light cleaning it would be
attic
mint, N
O cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. (See photos for overall condition).
Age
: A hand-blown bottle (Blown-In-Mold = BIM) with a tooled top, ca. late
1800's.

This is about as good of an old Heinz bottle as we've ever had. According to the aforementioned book on Heinz bottles, a similar jar as this one is pictured and then described in the book, as a
glass jar with a "star pattern on base, ovoid in shape, clear, approx. pt., possibly contained jelly, extremely rare-*
" The one pictured in the book I refer to, on page 209, looks like it is fluted most of the way up and is more of a round jar, it is hard to tell. Yet it is rated as '
EXTREMELY RARE
', which would put this one right up there. Note that the author states that it "possibly" contained jelly, there have been so few of them found that no one really knows. Yet in the U.S. Patent Office’s files, in 1883 Henry J. Heinz applied for a patent to manufacturer glass bottles and jars, to put his products up in, and noted in these 1883 notes it mentions, among other things, “ ... preserves, jellies, marmalades, jams, fruit-butters, ... “ So from early on the Heinz Co. was canning jellies, which would of come in this jar. Yet by 1900 it seems that the line of preserves, jellies, marmalades, jams, fruit-butters, was no longer being put up, as by this time, H. J. Heinz seems to just be dealing in vegetable products, sauces, and extracts. So I would venture to say this jar is probably from the 1880's. And note, it doesn't have 'H. J.” Heinz embossed on it, just "
HEINZ
", which is significant - a GREAT find,
check it out!
